Brace yourselves, maestros. This is some powerful stuff we’re heading into. &, unfortunately, not always easy. But I assure you- if you look headlong into the energy of your root chakra, your creativity & your life force will flow as it has never flown. It will FLY. (tweet tweet).
I know some of you might be saying my root what? For those of you who know a thing or two about yoga & the ancient science of the chakra system, bear with me while I divulge a detail or two as I know things to be.
In the Sanskrit yogic tradition, there are 7 spinning wheels of energy that stack up within the physical body- beginning at the base of spine (the pelvic floor & the perinium) & ending at the crown of the head. These wheels govern our life forces, or PRANA as yogis call it, & inform our emotional/physical/mental & ultimately our spiritual body.
While none of them are considered more important than the other, it makes sense to start with the chakra that addresses our foundation, our sense of connect to the physical realm, since this is the realm we are living in, after all. The ROOT, or Muladhara chakra.
The root chakra serves as our base. It is our sense of confidence & the feeling that we belong in the world, that we deserve to take up the room we need to do our life’s work. It is a deep, blood/fire red, & contains our most primal needs: air, food, shelter, security. SURVIVAL.
While our basic human needs of safety & survival as well as our sense of possibility are tied up in this chakra, I must also say, the balanced energy of the root chakra is NOT about pining for what is not present, but for loving your life RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.
It is about acceptance.
Now, I don’t know about you, but as an artist who has not quite yet experienced a sweeping sense of the traditional “success” in my career to date but has surely felt the strain of providing myself with the basics & definitely isn’t in acceptance of this & seems to be constantly longing for more, this energy center is a real doozy for me.
Add to that the fact that I grew up with a single parent where these things were also deeply challenged (knowing at seven my mom was worried about rent isn’t exactly a boost to the root) & you’ve got the making for a really imbalanced foundation.
I suspect I am not alone in this sense of free-floating uncertainty.
Lucky for us, we are artists, & we can invent something where there was originally nothing. & yoga, I’m finding, has been SO helpful in boosting that sense of invention & possibility.
Most of us enter the practice of yoga through a physical practice We are, after all, physical beings (or spiritual beings in physical bodies). The better care we take of our space suits, the better we can explore our space with, right?
The root chakra, in the physical sense, is about the feet, the legs, the hips, the pelvic floor- & ultimately, a solid sense of overall physical health.
There are several physical body practices that focus on certain poses or rituals (or asanas & kriyas, as they are also called) to help stimulate the energy center of this chakra. This one below, from yogatoday.com, is a good example & offering in the Kundalini tradition.
On the outside, it appears to be a somewhat mellow physical body practice, but I assure you, it is VERY powerful.
Also notice the sense of play & lightness found here (despite the image of Sarah’s face below). It reminds me of the movement of (my) children, who naturally gravitate towards their true nature without thought or judgement. Perhaps inviting those sensibilities will support you as you approach this video offering.
If the above practice is too strenuous for you at this time, a simple, seated sound meditation can serve, as well. There is also the option to lay down, with knees bent & feet on the floor, letting the knees fall inward to support each other. Feel free to include any slight pelvic rocking in either the seated or laying down version to help further deepen the entry for Muladhara energy. Enjoy the eight minutes of sound as found below:
It’s a lot to take in, I know, & typically the best way to integrate information is to just DO IT yourself.
Think ACCEPTANCE. See what happens.
DO YOUR BEST TO NOT JUDGE THE JUICE. I cannot stress this enough. As with any energy system that may be imbalanced & is being given a good shake, you might be privy to a flood of sticky, heavy mojo that doesn’t feel so good.
I’ll be posting some prompts & mantras throughout the week to help deepen your exploration & then we will dive into some art-making possibilities.
Feel free to reach out in the Facebook forum or to dialogue privately at flow at cricketdesmarais dot com to share your insights & revelations.
It’s BIG WORK. I’m doing it right now & it hasn’t been easy. But I’ll also share that in the last week, I’ve made some major breakthroughs in both my personal & creative life that may not have occurred had I not been willing to work with my hugely blocked root chakras.
I’ll share more as we go along, & hope YOU will, too.
BIG LOVE, BIG HUGS! love & more love,
