“Poetry is eternal graffiti written in the heart of everyone.” -LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI
A great many books & essays have been written about poetry, & I’m neither equipped or interested in doing either at this moment. What I DO want to offer is this: Poetry is for everyone. We need only to take the time to connect with it to let it touch our hearts & help us see our world differently.
Yes, poetry requires us to slow down, & in this culture, that can be nothing short of a miracle. The beauty that occurs when we do, however, can alter the course of your life.
You begin to notice things you might not have before, colors become more vibrant, the scent of things strike deep into your soul, calling forth memory after memory. In short, your senses awaken. Your heart opens. Everything else gets stripped away as you recall your own sense of humanity.
If for a moment you think- Nah! Poetry isn’t for me, just take a few minutes to look at this powerful poem/film below on Derrick Brown’s poem. His delivery alone will entrance you, & the words, stacked up upon each other, will shift your perspective of your youness in the world & your brief time within it.
But don’t listen to me. Listen in for yourself. & then remember- Poetry is everywhere if you let it be. Dive in. It’s all yours for the taking.
